He acquired Wewelsburg Castle in 1933, founded the Ahnenerbe research body in 1935, kept a private seer (Karl Maria Wiligut), and ran the Holocaust apparatus and occult research side by side; he also pushed SS members to register as 'Gottgläubig' ('God-believing,' a real Reich census category from a November 1936 decree, reaching 2.7 million people by 1939), and in a June 1942 speech vowed to 'settle accounts with Christianity' and replace it with an SS-driven pagan Germanic religion.
