How it works
In alchemy the Black Sun stood for the 'nigredo,' the dark dissolving phase that comes before enlightenment; the modern link to a 'Saturn black cube' is a late occult invention with no real historical basis. The political twist came in 1933 when Himmler installed a twelve-spoke Black Sun mosaic at Wewelsburg castle, turning a symbol of inner purification into a racial and geopolitical one.
Why it matters
It shows how an old spiritual image can be hollowed out and repurposed into hate symbolism, and it supplies the pre-modern root of a sign the engine had previously logged only as a 20th-century Nazi emblem.
