A romantic Grail-hunter got recruited into the SS, wrote a book praising Lucifer as a hero — then was found frozen to death in the Alps.

Otto Rahn, an SS researcher and Grail-hunter (not to be confused with the chemist Otto Rohm or the SA chief Ernst Rohm).

How it works
An independent medievalist and cave-explorer, he did fieldwork in the Pyrenees and at Montsegur and argued in his 1933 book that a medieval poem was really a coded history of the Cathars. This caught Himmler's attention; Rahn joined the SS's Ahnenerbe research unit in 1936, rising from a junior to a higher SS rank. His 1937 SS-funded book cast Lucifer as a positive Aryan light-bringer and the Judeo-Christian God as an oppressor. An openly gay, anti-authoritarian man, he was assigned guard duty at Dachau in 1937, resigned the SS in February 1939, and was found frozen to death (ruled suicide) in the Tyrol around March 13, 1939.
Why it matters
The engine's point: the Nazi state absorbed his mythology and then discarded the man who carried it. It deliberately names no single mastermind behind this pattern — that reading is held open.
