Herman Wirth (1885-1981)
player
A Nazi think-tank's founding myth of a lost Aryan Atlantis was built on a book everyone knew was a fake.
Who they are
Herman Wirth (1885-1981), a Dutch-German scholar who co-founded and first led the Nazi SS research body the Ahnenerbe in 1935.
What they do
He supplied its early ideology: the idea of an advanced ancient Aryan civilization in a now-lost North Atlantic land.
How it works
He leaned heavily on the Oera Linda book, a 19th-century hoax already publicly debunked by a Berlin panel in 1934, promoting it as a genuine ancient chronicle; the SS kept it around for its usefulness, not its truth, to relocate the Aryan origin story to the far north.
Why it matters
Wirth was sidelined and pushed out by 1938 as Himmler brought in harsher racial-science figures, but the Nordic-Atlantean seed he planted was later reworked into postwar Hyperborean survival myths; the engine holds this as an object and names no single holder.
The engine's record — word for word
Dutch-German scholar, Ahnenerbe co-founder 1935, first president. Anchored the early ideological framework in the Nordic-Atlantean hypothesis — a primordial advanced Aryan civilization in a lost North Atlantic landmass pre-migration. Leaned heavily on the disputed Oera Linda book. Academically marginalized within Ahnenerbe; left organization by 1938 as Himmler replaced him with more aggressive racial-science figures. Survived war, continued Atlantean scholarship in Netherlands postwar until 1981. Report #73: provided the Nordic-Atlantean ideological seed that Landig/Serrano later transmuted into the Hyperborean-survival mythos. [Report #134] Nordic-Atlantean / polar arc: Wirth promoted the Oera Linda Book (Die Ura Linda Chronik, 1933) as an authentic Frisian/Atlantean chronicle though it is a 19th-C hoax (debunked by Hubner's Berlin panel, 4 May 1934) — held by the SS for FUNCTION not truth, shifting the Aryan origin to the North Atlantic (see polar_homeland_thesis). Held as object; name no holder.
