Open questionThe 'lost advanced civilization' mythos (Atlantis, Hyperborea, today's Younger Dryas revival) is dead as literal history — no material trace of the required technology, and the favored catastrophe mechanism's key sites retracted — but stays open as two other things: an encoding of real, local post-glacial floods inflated into a global story, and a plug-and-play legitimacy charter that opposed movements have grabbed for opposite purposes (the same imaginary sunken continent served European racial-origin myths and Tamil nationalist ones). Which function dominates is held, and the myth has no fixed owner.
