How it works
Older Mesopotamian versions predate Genesis (Atrahasis, Gilgamesh) and share the sealed boat, releasing a bird, and a sacrifice afterward, and in Atrahasis the flood comes because human 'noise' overwhelms a god, not because of sin. Hebrew flood words echo older Akkadian ones, and cousins of the story appear in India (Manu and the fish), Greece (Deucalion), and China (Gun-Yu, where damming fails but dredging channels works).
Why it matters
The engine deliberately keeps this open: the worldwide spread could reflect one real event, or shared human psychology, or cultural borrowing, or even modern authors reading one template into many cultures, so it names no single explanation.
