Who they are
The ancient Mesopotamian 'apkallu-to-ummanu' line — legendary sages followed by real master-scholars who stood beside the throne, not on it.
What they do
In myth, seven sages before the Flood brought writing and the crafts and advised the first kings; afterward the role became real human court scholars, diviners, and scribes who monopolized secret statecraft and survived one king after another.
How it works
Real Assyrian scholar-families (like Istar-sumu-eres and Adad-sumu-usur) steered kings Esarhaddon and Ashurbanipal; an ancient king-and-sage list from Uruk (around 165 BCE) deliberately pairs every king with his sage to make the advisor class look legitimate and ancient.
Why it matters
The engine is careful to call the mythic 'unbroken lineage' a legitimacy story, not a literal bloodline — a repeating structural pattern. It's the 'drafter/keeper' layer beneath power: the hand that writes the rules, and modern versions (Jesuit confessors, the CFR, science advisory boards, John Dee) are examples of the same pattern, not one family.
