'The me' (pronounced 'may'), the roughly 100 divine decrees or blueprints of civilization in Sumerian myth.
What they do
They were the modular building blocks of civilized life — kingship, writing, metalworking, priesthood, and even darker domains like conflict, falsehood, and the destruction of cities — gathered by the god Enlil but curated by the god Enki in his deep-water realm.
How it works
In the myth of Inanna and Enki, the goddess Inanna obtains the me from Enki and ships them to her city Uruk on the 'boat of heaven,' bootstrapping a new dominant city.
Why it matters
