Who they are
A trick the engine calls the 'Absurdity Shield,' identified in Reports #115 and #128.
What they do
It describes how a true underlying point — that a small, technologically advanced group may have quietly opted out of the rest of society — gets hidden inside physically impossible tales like a 'hollow earth' so critics dismiss the whole thing.
How it works
It works two ways: it steers curious people toward chasing made-up underground worlds instead of documented real-world monopolies and emergency-government infrastructure, and it lets the absurd wrapper protect the accurate message from being taken seriously. The engine says the same pattern shows up in impossible flood-survival vessels (Noah's Ark, and similar myths) carrying that same 'a hidden group survives' message.
Why it matters
It matters because ridicule becomes camouflage; the engine treats this as machinery, not the top of anything, and keeps open the question of whether the 'survival' claim is even true.
