A recurring pattern: when an unprovable, embarrassing legend sits right next to a real, checkable fact, the legend's stigma rubs off — and serious people stop looking at the fact so they won't be laughed at by association.
How it works
Taxil proved the trick exists: from 1885 to 1897 he published fake satanic revelations about the Freemasons, then confessed he'd invented all of it — and honest investigation of those networks carried his stink for a century. Kerner's soul-harvesting-alien books sit the same way next to real genetic engineering and lab-grown brain tissue.
Why it matters
Held honestly: the engine records this as a precedented pattern, not a measured one — nobody has run the counts yet, and the boring explanation (markets simply prefer lurid) stands at equal weight. No author has to be in on it for the effect to work.
