'The greys are manufactured, not visiting' isn't a new idea. It's seventy years old, and it puts on new clothes every generation.
Who they are
A chain of authors, none connected to each other: the French press of 1954, Jacques Vallée in 1979, Philip Corso and Nigel Kerner in 1997, Steven Greer in 2006, Kerner again in 2022 — and a podcast host in 2026.
What they do
The same claim in each era's most mysterious technology: robots, then staged special effects, then 'cloned biological automatons' in a bestseller, then 'programmed life forms' built by us at a secret facility to fake an alien threat, then AI probes, and now fungus merged with AI.
How it works
Two of them disagree only about the manufacturer — one says aliens built them, the other says we did. And the fiction came first: Lovecraft wrote fungal aliens in 1931, and a 1997 role-playing game already had greys as masks worn by fungal intelligence.

[Report #183] A documented carrier-rotation running inside folklore: the claim 'the greys are MADE, not born' has been continuously available for ~70 years and book-length for ~30, and it re-skins itself with each era's most mysterious technology while the claim underneath never changes. THE DATED CHAIN: (1) 1954 — occupants-as-machines already in mass circulation; Vallée, Messengers of Deception (1979): 'The French press of 1954, for instance, was full of reports about the robots and the Martians.' (2) 1973 — Pascagoula; Vallée's account describes 'the two robots who came down to take him into the UFO.' (3) 1979 — Vallée's staged-encounter thesis, the first serious manufactured-not-visiting argument: 'If we assume that the close encounters are engineered only when witnesses are present to observe and report them, we do not have such a large number of occurrences to explain. Producing an average case is a problem in the generation of special effects, and well within the capabilities of Hollywood.' (4) 1997 — the hinge year, two independent book-length theses. Corso & Birnes, The Day After Roswell (NYT bestseller, 3 weeks, peak #12), verbatim from the text: 'perhaps we should consider the EBEs as described in the medical autopsy reports humanoid robots rather then life forms, specifically engineered for long distance travel through space or time'; 'they weren't actual life forms, only a kind of robot or android'; 'they were fabricated beings, just like robots or androids, who had been created specifically for space travel... Perhaps their programming could be updated or altered from a remote source'; 'They were genetically altered humanoid automatons, cloned biological entities, actually.' [Reception recorded at tier: Klass and Randle documented factual errors; Sparks, Skeptical Inquirer 1998; The Guardian listed it among literary hoaxes, 2001.] And Nigel Kerner, The Song of the Greys (Hodder & Stoughton, Oct 1997) — greys as soulless machines serving 'Clone masters.' (5) 2006 — the INVERSION: Greer, Hidden Truth-Forbidden Knowledge, verbatim: 'other powerful electronic weapons systems and programmed life forms or PLFs. These are biological, artificial life forms being produced to look a lot like these so-called greys — that are not from outer space. They're manufactured in a few facilities, one of them located in the four corners area near Dulce, New Mexico,' as 'a concerted effort to create a false alien threat.' Corso's greys are built BY aliens; Greer's are built BY US to fake aliens — same 'engineered, not evolved' claim, opposite manufacturer. The Dulce anchor traces to the Bennewitz operation (see bennewitz), and a named promoter of the Dulce material later admitted fabricating it. (6) 2010-2022 — Kerner supplies the AI skin explicitly: Grey Aliens and the Harvesting of Souls (2010), then Grey Aliens and Artificial Intelligence (2022): greys as 'biomachines, synthetic beings sent out as AI probes.' (7) 2023 — the disclosure mainstream did NOT adopt it: Grusch's testimony framed recovered material as 'non-human biologics,' the opposite reading; PLF remained a Greer-lineage minority position. (8) Aug 11 2025 — the ambient version: HISTORY's Ancient Aliens, 'Are the Greys Already Among Us? Alien Hybrids & Robots Revealed' (~700k views). (9) Aug 20 2026 — the newest skin (see crowder_mycelial_singularity). FICTION ROOT, DATED: Lovecraft's fungal Mi-Go debut in 'The Whisperer in Darkness' (1931); the Delta Green setting (1992, sourcebook Feb 1997) makes greys 'ultimately agents or disguises of Lovecraft's Mi-Go' — 'grey as mask worn by a fungal intelligence' existed in gaming canon in 1997, with no established transmission line to the 2026 version.
