An idea being tested (Report #153): that the most dominant form of life may be the small replicators that control their hosts, not the big creatures we can see.
What they do
It separates two claims — that microbes DOMINATE life (treated as well-documented) and that they are the true controllers at the top (deliberately left open).
How it works
On dominance: of ~550 gigatons of living carbon, bacteria are by far the most cells (~10^30), the oldest life, and they run Earth's chemical cycles, and our own cells are descended from bacterial mergers with the gut microbiome shaping our mood and behavior; on control, it cites parasites that hijack hosts — Toxoplasma erasing rats' fear of cats, fungus-zombified ants, hairworms driving crickets to drown — but keeps whether this equals true 'apex control' explicitly unsettled.
Why it matters
The desc is strict that 'they dominate' is scored separately from 'they're the hidden boss,' refusing both the bleak 'we're just meat-puppets' conclusion and any dismissal — the big question is deliberately held open.
