Spiritual Eugenics — the term and its documented instances

[Report #196] **In plain terms:** the idea that humanity is evolving spiritually toward a higher type, joined to the idea that some people or groups are further along than others and should lead, be selected, or be bred for. THE TERM. Jules Evans's Spiritual Eugenics project (2021) describes 'the overlap between New Age spirituality and eugenics' — 'a new species of superbeings, a master-race', with sub-humans who 'need to be controlled, maybe sterilized or even at worst exterminated' (presented by Evans as an idea 'one often finds', not a definition). Joshua Mitchell uses it metaphorically for identity politics: 'a strange sort of antiegalitarian spiritual eugenics, according to which the pure and innocent groups must ascend and the stained transgressor groups must be purged' (American Awakening, p. xxxviii). DOCUMENTED INSTANCES, each its own record: Aristotle's law that no deformed child be reared (classical_infanticide_eugenics); Campanella's priest-timed breeding (campanella_city_of_the_sun); Blavatsky's root races (helena_blavatsky); Lanz von Liebenfels's Aryans 'bred' by 'higher and different kinds of being' (lanz_bibliomystikon_1931); Pelley's race ladder of 'spiritual attainments' (william_dudley_pelley); Julian Huxley's positive and negative eugenics (huxley_julian); Gerald Heard's Neo-Brahmin caste (gerald_heard); Gardner Murphy's 'Positive and Negative Eugenics' (gardner_murphy); Leary's 'genetic elites' and space migration (timothy_leary). HELD APART, also documented: Aldous Huxley's latent-potential doctrine and Michael Murphy's evolutionary panentheism (no breeding component in their own texts); Aldous 'never joined the Eugenics Society'.
