How it works
Esalen's historian says Heard's advice 'finally tipped the scales' for its founders, and he taught there in 1962. In 1939 he wrote that 'only the rise of a Neo-Brahmin type could be an adequate answer to humanity's case' — a leader class above administrators and technicians, with 'routineers' at the bottom.
Why it matters
He never uses the word eugenics. It is a ranking of people by spiritual development, not a breeding plan.

ESALEN. Kripal (Esalen, 2007, p. 91): 'Gerald Heard also played a significant role in the founding of Esalen. It was his charismatic presence and advice that finally tipped the scales for Murphy and Price.' The 1962 Esalen catalog lists 'THREE SEMINARS LED BY GERALD HEARD … THE NEW CONCEPT OF EVOLUTION'. Anderson (The Upstart Spring): Heard 'had been a close friend of Aldous Huxley's since 1929 and had immigrated to the United States with the Huxley family in 1937'.
THE NEO-BRAHMIN (Pain, Sex and Time, 1939, ch. XV): 'only the rise of a Neo-Brahmin type could be an adequate answer to humanity's case'; 'could this order take the leadership of mankind and help all to escape cataclysm?'; 'the new dynamic caste, the Neo-Brahmin rising out of the Neo-Kshatriyas … This Neo-Doctor, having no property and no executive power, would be the incarnate conscience of mankind'; the base rank is 'the Sudra routineers'. Man the Master (1941): 'this leader-class may be called the neo-Brahmin.' The book never uses the word 'eugenics' (0 hits); 'superbeings' is a later writer's wording, not Heard's. Held as a documented caste-ranked spiritual-leadership doctrine inside Esalen's founding circle; not a breeding program.
