It teaches Enlightenment moral ideas through symbolic ritual, but has no single global boss; its independent Grand Lodges often feud. Its US membership peaked at 4.1 million in 1959 and has fallen about 80% to 869,000 by 2023. The engine debunks many myths: the Great Seal's Eye of Providence is a common Christian art motif, the DC street plan copies European city design, and claims like Allen Dulles being a Mason have zero evidence. It stresses that lodge-to-intelligence overlap was just the demographic of early-1900s WASP elites, not a secret command chain.
Why it matters
What actually spread wasn't secret rule but its methods (compartmentalization, vetted initiation, using a disciplined minority), which reappear in intelligence agencies and corporate hierarchies. The engine's point is about structure and technique, not a shadow government.
