Adam Weishaupt (1776)
playerIntelligence & Surveillance · The Vatican & Religious Power · Occult & Esoteric
The real Illuminati was a short-lived political club crushed in the 1780s, nothing like the world-controlling cabal of legend.
Who they are
Adam Weishaupt, the Jesuit-educated professor who founded the Bavarian Illuminati in 1776.
What they do
The engine describes the actual historical Illuminati as a rationalist political society, and the sinister modern version as a myth.
How it works
Weishaupt borrowed Jesuit-style methods - strict hierarchy, members watching each other, secrets revealed only in stages - to pursue openly political and anti-religious goals; the Bavarian government suppressed the order in 1785 and published its seized papers (a solid primary source), and it was completely destroyed by 1790, with the blood-drinking omnipotent 'Illuminati' being a later reactionary panic amplified by forgeries.
Why it matters
It is a case of a small, real, and quickly-defeated group being inflated into an all-powerful myth, and the engine corrects the record (Weishaupt was Jesuit-schooled, not a secret Jesuit agent).
The engine's record — word for word
Illuminati founder. Jesuit-educated professor at University of Ingolstadt. Explicitly utilized Jesuit organizational structures — strict hierarchical obedience, mutual surveillance, gradual revelation of true goals. Bavarian government suppressed Order 1785, published seized documents (Originalschriften = Tier 1). Documents reveal goals were entirely political and rationalist: subversion of Masonic lodges, abolition of monarchy and organized religion. Historical Illuminati completely destroyed by 1790. The omnipotent blood-drinking Illuminati of conspiracy literature is a myth (Barruel/Robison reactionary panic, amplified by Protocols forgery). CORRECTION (Jesuit Report): Wilhelmsbad 1782 Jesuit command claim is Taxil-class fabrication. Weishaupt was Jesuit-educated, not a Jesuit agent. [Report #110 — Symbology] [web-checked Jun 18 2026] Report #110: chose the Owl of Minerva (owl-on-a-book) as the Bavarian Illuminati's lowest 'Minerval' degree emblem (founded May 1 1776) — wisdom/illumination iconography later echoed by the Bohemian Grove owl.
