Technocracy Inc. (1933-)

institutionDarknet & Cyber
Canada banned this group in 1940, un-banned it without explanation in 1943 — and the files are still partially classified.
Who they are

Technocracy Inc. — the 1930s movement that wanted North America run by engineers, with money abolished and everything measured in energy.

What they do

The organization behind the ideas this map keeps finding echoes of: grey uniforms, grey-painted cars, a salute to their leader, a plan to merge Canada, Greenland, Mexico and the US into one engineer-run 'Technate.' Elon Musk's grandfather was its Canadian research director; the man who invented 'peak oil' wrote its textbook.

How it works

Started as a 1919 engineers' study group (Thorstein Veblen was a member), got a Columbia University platform in 1932, blew up within weeks when its leader was exposed as a fraud — and rebuilt anyway as a uniformed movement with hundreds of chapters. A 600-car grey caravan drove from Los Angeles to British Columbia in 1947.

Why it matters

Because the map's biggest question runs through it: its social promises died, but its metering ideas — track every unit of energy, tie money to identity, let experts override politics — keep reappearing today, rebuilt by people who never read it. One famous exception actually carried the ideas out the door: the textbook's author, who repackaged the collapse math as 'peak oil.'

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #189 — all facts tiered/verified at integration; see HERE ALAN gap-fill] The 1930s organization whose doctrine the engine's Technate concept descends from — until now present only as body text. LINEAGE: Technical Alliance, NYC 1919-21 (Scott + Charles Steinmetz, Thorstein Veblen [listed member — adjacent, not architect], Tolman, Alsberg, Chase; Energy Survey of North America begun, never finished; IWW and Railroad Brotherhoods as CLIENTS — vs Scott's own later denial of IWW membership, both held) → Committee on Technocracy, Columbia 1932 (Rautenstrauch) → January 1933 SPLIT after the twin blows of the Hotel Pierre flop (Jan 13, 1933) and the credential demolition (see howard_scott): Harold Loeb's Continental Committee (Plan of Plenty, Estes Park Jul 4 1933; collapsed Oct 1936) vs Scott's Technocracy Incorporated — functional Jan 1933, NY State charter April 1934, with M. King Hubbert as first Secretary and 'Governor of Education.' THE GREY AESTHETIC (contemporaneously documented): grey double-breasted suits, members' cars painted grey, the Monad insignia, an open-hand salute to Scott, youth called 'Farads'; Hal Draper's contemporaneous 1944 critique read the pageantry as Nazi-derived and quotes Scott: voting is 'grandiose nonsense,' 'Political liberty is a dead issue in America today'; membership excluded 'aliens and Asiatics.' TOTAL CONSCRIPTION program from July 1940 ('Men, Machines, Materiel, and Money... Profits to None'); telegram pledging the org to FDR, Dec 7 1941. CANADA: banned June 1940 under the Defence of Canada Regulations (Mackenzie King: organizations seeking to 'overthrow the government... by force'; trigger = the Yorkton total-conscription presentation, Jun 1 1940; Vancouver arrests Oct 7-8 1940 incl. Haldeman) — ban RESCINDED WITHOUT EXPLANATION Oct 15, 1943; per Canada's History, government files on it 'remain partially classified' today. STRENGTH: West Coast + Western Canada — 8 Vancouver chapters; 'Operation Columbia,' a 600-car grey caravan LA→BC, Jul 1 1947; 5,000 at Vancouver Forum. MISATTRIBUTION FLAG: the circulating '500,000 members' figure belongs to the Utopian Society of America (the 1933-35 LA offshoot), not this org. THE TERRITORIAL MAP: the projected Technate spanned Canada, Greenland, Mexico, the US and beyond (the Study Course appendix runs past Panama into Colombia/Venezuela/the Guianas) — the Greenland echo against 2025-26 annexation talk is drawn in print by Townley (The Conversation); see donroe. RECEPTION ACROSS THE SPECTRUM, dated: Trotsky, writing Aug 1934 (publ. Liberty, Mar 23, 1935, verbatim at marxists.org): "'Technocracy' can come true only under communism, when the dead hands of private property rights and private profits are lifted from your industrial system" — the Technate design legible to 1930s systems-thinkers of every camp. THE RECURRENCE PROOF: Norbert Wiener founded cybernetics (1948) warning against exactly this ('Those who suffer from a power complex find the mechanization of man a simple way to realize their ambitions'), and the same metering/feedback architecture was then independently adopted by Soviet planners (Glushkov/OGAS, per Peters), French theorists (Macy conferences, per Lafontaine), and Turkish state thinkers (Parslow, IJMES 2021 — who notes it 'remained largely at the stage of fantasy' there) — recurrence without transmission demonstrated with a named counter-ideological carrier. DECLINE: steady after 1948 as the price-system-collapse prediction failed; a wartime breakaway lasted ~a year; HQ NYC (155 E 44th St, 1939) → Rushland PA (1964) → Huntington Beach CA; Ferndale WA registration persists; current membership circa 15 — a ghost ship. DESCENDANT TRAILS WITH RECEIPTS: Hubbert → Shell → peak oil (see m_king_hubbert_1903_1989); Jacque Fresco (former member) → the Venus Project; Haldeman → the Musk genealogy (see apartheid_sa_haldeman_node, musk — genealogy + the grandson's four captured 'Martian Technocracy' tweets; doctrinal citation trail ABSENT). Archival pointer: UVA Special Collections holds a 'Technocracy, 1932-1934, 1938' folder, unexamined.
