Who they are
Howard Scott, self-styled engineer and 'Continental Director' of Technocracy Inc. — actually a ninth-grade-educated Greenwich Village floor-wax maker.
What they do
In December 1932 the press couldn't find out where he was born or educated; by January 1933 two newspapers had demolished his fake German doctorate, right as his one big radio address flopped so badly it killed the first wave of the movement.
How it works
He rebuilt anyway: uniforms, a salute, the title 'The Chief,' and total control until his death in 1970. He never trained a successor.
Why it matters
Because he's the same pattern this map tracks in documents — the forgery that survives its own exposure — walking around as a person. The fake gets debunked; the believers stay.

Margaret Mead, who knew him: 'In fact, he had only completed the ninth grade.' THE HOTEL PIERRE FLOP: Jan 13, 1933 — 400 elite guests, nationwide radio, universally recorded as 'a complete failure'; within days the credential exposure landed, Columbia cut the Committee loose, and the first craze (~250,000 at peak) deflated in weeks. THE REBUILD: the movement reformed around him anyway — uniforms, salute, 'The Chief' — the Forgery-Payoff shape at the level of a PERSON: the exposed fabulist retained as the doctrine's living mask (cf. taxil, the pseudo-Paracelsus print — the engine's documented pattern of forgery surviving its exposure). Own-voice canon (movement publications, verified): 'We owe nothing in our origins from Adam Smith, Ricardo... Karl Marx, Lenin' (KYW Radio, Nov 19, 1964); rejected Taylorism outright (1965). Wartime defections over his Soviet-collaboration turn (the turn Haldeman quit over, denouncing the org as 'a scientific Frankenstein'); post-1948 decline; ran Continental HQ from a Rushland, PA farm by 1964; d. January 1, 1970, Orlando — never trained a successor.
