Reverse Dominance Hierarchy (The Leveling Floor)
concept
Long before we had bosses, human groups actively ganged up to slap down anyone who tried to become one.
Who they are
The 'reverse dominance hierarchy,' an idea from anthropologist Christopher Boehm about how early hunter-gatherer bands enforced equality.
What they do
The engine reads it as the built-in human resistance to being ruled, the force that opposes any one person grabbing the top seat.
How it works
Boehm's work (1993 and 1999) showed forager bands aren't passively equal; the ordinary members team up to suppress any would-be dominator through a ladder of punishments, ridicule, then shunning, then ostracism, then exile, then killing. So the drive to carve out a ruler is not just as old as hierarchy, it is the repeated breaking of an equally old leveling instinct.
Why it matters
It matters as a correction: any grab for power is a breach of a deep, ancient human habit of pushing tyrants back down, and the engine deliberately leaves open who, if anyone, sits on top.
The engine's record — word for word
[Report #174] The evolved leveling default. Boehm (Egalitarian Behavior and Reverse Dominance Hierarchy, Current Anthropology 1993; Hierarchy in the Forest, 1999): forager bands are not passively equal - a rank-and-file coalition ACTIVELY suppresses would-be dominators via graduated sanctions (ridicule -> shunning -> ostracism -> exile -> execution); egalitarianism is an aggressively maintained political equilibrium, not a default. STRUCTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (held date-invariant): this is the exemption fork's OPPONENT, not its raw material - reverse dominance is the mechanism by which a band PREVENTS any operator seat from being occupied. So the fork is not merely 'as old as hierarchy'; it is the recurring BREACH of an equally-old leveling floor (see concept 'The Leveling Floor & the Fork's Breach'). LENS (held, not crowned): L2/emergent in its source framing (a bottom-up coalition) - the exact opposite of the L1-authored reading the source-report imposed on it, logged as a framing correction, not adopted. Deep-time evolutionary dating held under the engine's chronology superposition (no stamped Paleolithic date). Apex held; name no holder. [Fact-checked: Boehm accurately represented; the source-report inverted his bottom-up mechanism.]
