Parochial Altruism (In-Group Cooperation Fused to Out-Group Hostility)

conceptBiotech & Transhumanism
The same instinct that makes people loyal and self-sacrificing for their own group is fused to hostility toward outsiders — and war made it win.
Who they are

A concept from a 2007 Science paper by Choi and Bowles on how in-group cooperation and out-group hostility evolved together.

What they do

It holds that pure kindness and pure tribalism each fail on their own, but bonded together — fierce loyalty inside a group fueled by hostility to outsiders — they become a winning strategy under deadly conflict.

How it works

Using game theory and simulated agents, the authors show groups of these fused 'parochial altruists' drive rival groups to extinction; crucially the authors say no designer is involved and that deliberate effort shows up only in what DISMANTLES the trait (teaching and socialization).

Why it matters

The desc says this is the natural emotional fuel that a manufactured group-split could exploit — but it corrects the source report's spin: the fuel arises on its own, and whether anyone is steering it is deliberately left open ('name no holder').

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #174] Choi & Bowles, 'The Coevolution of Parochial Altruism and War' (Science 318:636-640, 2007): generic altruism and pure parochialism are each non-viable alone, but FUSED - intense within-group cooperation fueled by out-group hostility - become a dominant strategy under lethal intergroup conflict (agent-based + game-theoretic modeling; parochial-altruist groups drive rivals to extinction). The biological substrate the exemption fork's out-group manufacturing runs ON. LENS (held): L2/emergent gene-culture coevolution in the source's own framing; the authors disclaim any designer and note 'deliberate' agency appears only as what DISMANTLES the trait (teaching/socialization) - so the L1-authored 'operator hijacks it' reading is the source-report's overlay, corrected here, not asserted. Emotional fuel the Engineered Fracture (#43) can exploit, but the fuel is emergent; who (if anyone) directs it stays held. Apex held; name no holder. [Fact-checked: Choi & Bowles accurately represented; framing inverted by the source-report.]
