Catalhoyuk - 'No Gentry but Grave-Makers' (Counter-Instance)

eventOccult & Esoteric
A 9,000-year-old town proves a settled society can stay equal, and the engine caught its own source report claiming the exact opposite.
Who they are

Catalhoyuk, a large Neolithic settlement studied in a 2023 archaeology paper by Kay and colleagues.

What they do

The engine logs this as a counter-example: a complex, settled society where a permanent elite did NOT form.

How it works

The study found wealth in goods and property was broadly shared, and inequality in burial honors actually fell over time (measured Gini scores dropped). Households that briefly became prominent lost that status again — being central was 'unsustainable.' The authors flatly say there was 'no gentry' and suggest burial customs were used to level things out. Importantly, the engine's own source report had cited this same paper to claim the reverse — that a ruling seat hoarded ritual power — which was a straight inversion, now corrected. Dating is left unsettled between the mainstream (~7100 BCE) and an alternative (~2500-1800 BCE).

Why it matters

It is a real case where equality held instead of hardening into rule by an elite, and it shows the engine correcting a factual flip in its own material. It names no ruler at the top.

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #174] Neolithic Catalhoyuk. Kay et al., 'No gentry but grave-makers' (World Archaeology 54:584-601, 2023): material/property wealth broadly egalitarian, AND burial 'symbolic capital' inequality FELL over time (Gini 0.66->0.44 intentional inclusions; 0.59->0.47 all artefacts); accumulation in 'History Houses' was TEMPORARY ('almost every house eventually became centred'; centrality an 'unsustainable status'); the authors explicitly deny an elite ('No gentry'; 'not especially autonomous elite households') and offer burial-as-LEVELLING ('nip potential inequality in the bud'). LOGGED AS A COUNTER-INSTANCE: a complex sedentary society where the exemption fork did NOT close - the leveling floor held. This CORRECTS the source-report, which cited this exact paper for the OPPOSITE claim (monopolistic ritual hoarding by an operator seat) - a straight framing inversion, reversed here. CHRONOLOGY (weighted superposition): mainstream ~7100 BCE bracketed; Breshears/Framework #1 ~2500-1800 BCE weighted, not collapsed. Apex held; name no holder. [Fact-checked: the source paper found the OPPOSITE of what the source-report claimed.]
