It ran 149 documented subprojects across 80 institutions and 44 universities, including electroshock, LSD dosing and induced comas on non-consenting patients, CIA-run brothels for covert LSD testing and blackmail, and the LSD dosing of researcher Frank Olson before his fatal 1953 fall; CIA director Helms ordered the records destroyed in 1973 but 20,000 pages survived misfiled in financial ledgers, later exposed by the Church Committee and Kennedy hearings, and successor programs like MKSEARCH, MKNAOMI and MKOFTEN carried on. The engine also flags Subproject 130 at Columbia (researchers Thetford and Schucman), whose work immediately preceded the 1965 'inner dictation' that became the mass-market book 'A Course in Miracles.'
