Human-Gene Primate Brain Edits (ARHGAP11B / MCPH1)

mechanismBiotech & Transhumanism
Eleven monkeys were given a human brain gene — and beat normal monkeys on memory tests.
Who they are

Two real lab results the engine had never logged: a human brain-size gene put into a marmoset, and human copies of a brain gene (MCPH1) put into 11 rhesus monkeys.

What they do

The marmoset's normally-smooth brain grew bigger and wrinkled; the 11 monkeys developed slower (human-style) and scored better on short-term memory and reaction time than normal monkeys.

How it works

Single human genes inserted into primate brains — verified in Science (2020) and National Science Review (2019).

Why it matters

Real building blocks for 'engineered cognition' — but held strictly as parts in lab animals, never a made person. Each has a catch (the marmoset was only tested as a fetus; the monkeys develop slowly).

The engine's record — word for word
Cell/model-verified building blocks for engineered cognition/macrocephaly — the component the engine's grey/space-hominid inventory previously lacked. (1) ARHGAP11B, a human-specific gene, expressed in the FETAL neocortex of the common marmoset increased basal radial glia progenitors and upper-layer neurons, ENLARGED the neocortex, and INDUCED cortical folding in a normally-unfolded primate brain (Heide et al., Science 2020; PRIMARY-VERIFIED). Failure mode: tested strictly at fetal stage; long-term live-birth viability unassessed. (2) MCPH1 (microcephalin): the Kunming Institute of Zoology generated ELEVEN transgenic rhesus macaques carrying 2-9 human MCPH1 copies, showing human-like NEOTENY (delayed cortical/myelination maturation) and — in delayed-matching-to-sample tasks — BETTER short-term working memory and SHORTER reaction time than wild-type controls (Shi et al., National Science Review 2019; PRIMARY-VERIFIED). Failure mode: delayed overall neural maturation; ethical/cost friction caps scale. ENGINE POSTURE: held strictly at the CELL/MODEL-ANIMAL stage as a COMPONENT INVENTORY, NEVER an assembled organism — maps to the macrocephaly/cognition traits in grey_alien_typology WITHOUT promoting the organism-level reading (see engineered_greys_lineage: the composition ledger stays empty; template froze 1961, tech is 2020s). Mask-rotation: the MCPH1 work is Chinese (Kunming; cf. china_primate_scnt_pipeline), ARHGAP11B German (MPI-CBG) — no single holder. Sources: Heide Science 2020; Shi NSR 2019 (both verified 2026).
