What they do
It cracked the hard problem of cloning primates and built the only pipeline that can churn out genetically identical monkeys for brain-disease and pharmaceutical research. The engine is careful to say this is NOT a story of a new top power taking over.
How it works
In 2018 they made the first cloned macaques (Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua) using fetal cells plus chemicals that reset the cells; in 2024 they cloned a rhesus monkey (Retro) with a new placenta-fixing trick; in 2025 they launched a state-funded 25-year primate brain-mapping project. Western labs stay out because of ethics and regulation.
Why it matters
It shows one country cornering a rare research tool, not by conquering anyone but by being the only one willing and able to build it — a state-strategy advantage others simply don't contest.
