How it works

The original radar, built by Raytheon in California, was physically moved to Vardo in 1999 under a $23.5M U.S. Defense Department contract and restarted under Norwegian control in 2001; a larger Globus III followed from 2016 at about $121M. Both feed data into the U.S. Space Surveillance Network and Strategic Command, even though only Norwegian personnel run them. In 2017 nine Russian aircraft flew a mock attack profile against it.

Why it matters

It matters because Russia sees it as part of U.S. missile defense on its doorstep, and it's a concrete example of how thoroughly allied Arctic spying is fused with U.S. operations behind a national flag.
