How it works
It used a compact nuclear reactor and lithium heat pipes to heat a tungsten tip to 1,200°C, melting rock and forcing the molten material into cracks to form a glass lining (avoiding hauling out debris or pouring concrete) — but scaling from a 2-inch lab prototype to a 40-foot tunneling machine ran into an enormous waste-heat problem, with Los Alamos calculating that a 7-meter tunnel at 100m/day would need thousands of tons of cooling water.
Why it matters
The engine uses this real constraint to bound speculation about how much secret tunneling could have been done this way, and notes the Boring Company's Prufrock machines are the first commercial parallel — but do NOT carry the aerospace patents an earlier report claimed (those are verified Boeing-owned).

Technical limitation: scaling from 2-inch lab prototype to operational 40-foot TBM requires overcoming immense thermodynamic waste-heat dissipation challenges; LANL calculations indicated 7-meter tunnel at 100m/day would require thousands of tons of cooling water.
