Elon Musk's tunnel-digging machines are getting close to running with no humans inside — and one report's boldest claim about them turned out to be false.
Who they are

The Prufrock family of tunnel-boring machines built by The Boring Company, from Prufrock-1 (2020) to Prufrock-4 (in testing 2024-2026).

What they do

They dig transit tunnels faster and cheaper than traditional machines, digging and installing tunnel walls at the same time.

How it works

Newer versions launch within 24 hours of arriving on-site (no launch shaft needed) and aim for 'Zero-People-In-Tunnel' remote operation; claimed cost is about $8M per mile versus the traditional $500M-$2.5B, with real-world results around $10-27M per mile. A May 2026 report checked and found FALSE the claim that the company owns aerospace-grade dual-use patents — those patents actually belong to Boeing.

The TBC-specific patent portfolio does include continuous-mining and segment-erection patents, but the dual-use aerospace-propulsion claim that drove the report's H1 PARTIAL CONFIRM does NOT survive primary-source verification.
