The Colonie (Paulson, 1978)

conceptOccult & Esoteric
The group he writes the rules for and never explains — and the key to why the book isn't crankery.
Who they are

A membership body appearing only as rules inside Paulson's 1978 book: twelve positive commandments for Colonie members, twelve negative ones, and a chapter on how the Colonie should be led.

What they do

An organisation addressed as though the reader is already in it. Paulson never introduces it, never says who belongs or where it meets.

How it works

Knowing it is there changes the whole book. The 215 pages include chapters on professional boxing, car pooling, back spasms and how to stop a tornado, sitting beside chapters on telepathy and nuclear war. The opening pages set out tiers of manipulation and present the small subjects as deliberate practice — training on things that barely matter before trying anything that does.

Why it matters

Read item by item the book looks like the work of a crank, and that reading destroys it. Read as a training manual for a membership, all 215 pages have one shape. It is the clearest case in this file for why you look at a document from a thousand feet before grading its parts.

The engine's record — word for word
Membership apparatus in paulson_1978_psychic_warrior, written for rather than described: 'The Twelve Positive Commandments for Colonie Members' (pp. 144-145), 'The Twelve Negative Commandments for Colonie Members' (pp. 145-147), 'Democratic Leadership in the Colonie' (pp. 116-119). Dedication: 'This book is dedicated to those who will suffer and die in the struggle to save our Planet.' Engine read: the key to the book's architecture, and the reason an item-by-item read destroys it. The trivial chapters — professional boxing, car pooling, back spasms, how to stop a tornado — are not filler beside the operational material. The front matter sets out tiers of manipulation and presents low-stakes subjects as deliberate low-stress practice for members before anything is attempted at scale. Read as a training manual for a membership the 215 pages hold one shape; read as a list of opinions they read as crankery. Held side by side with temple_of_set as two membership bodies built around a mental discipline in the same decade; no record connects them.
