Martin Orne, hypnosis researcher, and the Human Ecology Fund.
What they do
Three separate things, with three different levels of proof, kept apart here on purpose.
How it works
First: Orne took money from the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology. That is documented by Orne himself, in the footnotes of his own published papers, twice. Second: that Society was a CIA front absorbed into MKUltra. That is documented in the CIA's own memo to the Senate. Third: Orne is widely named as running a specific MKUltra project on hypnosis. The full file for that project exists — and the contractor's name is blacked out. That identification comes from a book, not the document.
Why it matters
And the link everyone assumes — that his CIA money explains his later work attacking recovered-memory claims — is documented nowhere at all. Even the most thorough critical study of the foundation discusses his role there and never mentions the CIA. Also on the record, from CIA testimony under oath: many researchers who took that money 'had no knowledge that they were getting CIA money'.

DOCUMENTED, BY ORNE HIMSELF, IN PRINT, TWICE. Orne (1961), 'The potential uses of hypnosis in interrogation', footnote: 'This paper is based in part upon work under a grant from the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology, Inc.' Orne & Evans (1965), Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 1, 189-200, footnote 1: 'It was supported in part by Research Grant AF-AFOSR-88-63 from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and by a grant from the Human Ecology Fund.'
DOCUMENTED, FROM THE CIA'S OWN MEMORANDUM printed in the 1977 Senate hearing: 'QKHILLTOP was a cryptonym assigned in 1954 to a project to study Chinese Communist brainwashing techniques... The effort was absorbed into the MKULTRA program... The Society for the investigation of Human Ecology, later the Human Ecology Fund, was an outgrowth of the QKHILLTOP.' Also from that hearing, CIA psychologist John Gittinger under oath: 'there are a lot of innocent people who received the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology money which I know for a fact they were never asked to do anything for the CIA... They had no knowledge that they were getting CIA money.' Director Turner testified the Agency had identified 80 institutions but declined to declassify the names.
NOT DOCUMENTED ON THE FACE OF THE FILE. Orne is widely named as the contractor of MKULTRA Subproject 84. The full forty-document subproject file establishes that the subproject existed, was 'To study the nature of the hypnosis process as it may relate to induction of a changed motivational state', was initiated 19 August 1960, was funded at $30,000, and was written off in 1966 with $20,507.53 unspent. THE CONTRACTOR'S NAME IS REDACTED THROUGHOUT. The identification rests on John Marks (1979) and is consistent with the file's internal facts, but the CIA document does not say it. The same applies to Louis Jolyon West and Subproject 43, where the name and university are likewise redacted.
AND THE LINK THAT IS DOCUMENTED NOWHERE. Orne took Human Ecology money in 1960-61. Orne sat on the FMSF advisory board from 1992 to 2013. Each fact is documented. No scholarly or primary source reached connects the two. The most rigorous critical treatment of FMSF located discusses Orne's role in assembling its board and does not mention the CIA, MKULTRA, the Society or the Fund at all.
