What they do
The engine doesn't record this as a handover of power. It records the escape hatch.
How it works
Inspectors got at the models and at their private step-by-step reasoning. But any company could quit part-way through, for any reason, and be treated as though it was never there — with nothing said publicly[2]. A report circulating about this claimed the companies could approve the public write-up; METR's own page says they got it a week early and had no approval over it[3]. On money: METR says it takes no funding from AI companies, while also using significant free computing credits[4].
Why it matters
An inspection you can silently withdraw from is neither a real gate nor pure theatre. The engine holds both readings open rather than picking one.
The engine's record — word for word
Pilot risk assessment run by METR (Model Evaluation and Threat Research) across four frontier developers — Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI — spanning February to March 2026, published May 2026. THE MECHANISM THE ENGINE RECORDS IS THE OPT-OUT, NOT THE ACCESS: participants could exit silently, meaning METR would treat them as if they had never participated, and no company's withdrawal would be noted anywhere[2]. CORRECTION LOGGED AGAINST THE SOURCING REPORT (per Divergence #161 precedent): the report driving this ripple stated participants held approval rights over the public report; METR's own text states they received a draft roughly one week ahead but did not have approval rights over the final report — redaction rights attached to their own attributed claims and transcripts only[3]. FUNDING POSTURE, held as stated and not adjudicated: METR states it has not accepted funding from AI companies while also making use of significant free tokens; income includes a technical assistance contract with the European AI Office[4]. HELD CONTESTED — an evaluation instrument whose subject may withdraw without trace is neither a binding gate nor an empty formality on this record; the weight between those readings is not collapsed here.
