Joseph Smith (1805-1844) — Founder, Mormonism

personOccult & Esoteric · Crypto & Digital ID
By the Mormon church's own history, its founder used the same magic stone-in-a-hat he'd used to hunt buried treasure to produce its holy book.
Who they are

Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the founder of Mormonism in 1830.

What they do

The engine treats him as a clear case where a technique's real origins differ from its official announcement — and points out the church itself admits it.

How it works

By the church's own history pages, Smith was a folk-magic treasure hunter who peered at a seer stone in his hat to find buried silver (and was charged in 1826 as a 'glass looker'), then used that same stone-in-a-hat method to produce the Book of Mormon. He was also initiated as a Freemason in March 1842 and, about seven weeks later, introduced a temple ceremony with signs and tokens adapted from Masonic ritual — the engine notes faithful and critical readings differ on whether that was restoration or borrowing.

Why it matters

It matters because it shows a technique migrating from treasure-hunting into revelation, and the structure he built outlived his 1844 assassination.

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #172] Founder of Mormonism (1830). Substrate-vs-announcement at the origin, CONCEDED BY THE CHURCH'S OWN HISTORY PAGES (the strongest possible sourcing): Smith was a folk-magic treasure-digger who used a seer stone in a hat to look for buried 'Spanish silver' (churchofjesuschrist.org, 'Joseph Smith's 1826 Trial'); charged as a 'disorderly person' / 'glass looker' in the 1826 Bainbridge NY proceeding under a statute against 'pretending to discover where lost goods may be found'; and the SAME seer-stone-in-a-hat scrying technique produced the Book of Mormon (the Church's own Gospel Topics essay 'Book of Mormon Translation': 'Joseph placed... the seer stone in a hat, pressed his face into the hat... and read aloud the English words'). MASONRY -> ENDOWMENT: initiated a Freemason in the Nauvoo Lodge 15-16 Mar 1842; introduced the temple endowment (signs, tokens, grips, garments adapted from Masonic ritual) ~7 weeks later, 4 May 1842 (acknowledged even by LDS apologetic sources; interpretation — restoration-of-a-corrupt-original vs adaptation — is where faithful/critical accounts diverge). The operative technique (scrying, ritual geometry) migrated from treasure-hunting into revelation = Managed Transition (#36). Assassinated 27 Jun 1844; the structure survived him (Egregore #57).
