It multiplies terms like star formation rate, fraction of stars with planets, habitable planets, and how long civilizations last; as of April 2026 several terms are pinned down (nearly all stars have planets) while others stay wildly uncertain, and a Feb 2026 preprint argues civilizations must last under 5,000 years to explain why space seems silent.
Why it matters
It frames one of the biggest open questions, whether intelligent life is common but short-lived, and shows how much remains genuinely unknown.
