◉ PSYCHOHISTORY

The Attention-Extraction Stack (variable-reward / normative-dissociation engine)

mechanismThe Blackmail Network · Media & Managed Opposition
The apps in your pocket are built to hijack your focus, and courts are now letting kids sue over the damage.
Who they are

The design machinery behind social media that captures and holds your attention for profit.

What they do

The engine describes it as an engine that uses unpredictable rewards to zombify users, leaving them with less self-awareness, a warped sense of time, and weaker willpower.

How it works

Tools like variable rewards, autoplay, and endless scroll drive the effect. Insiders name it: Tristan Harris called the ad-driven model a 'race to the bottom of the brain stem,' and Sean Parker said Facebook was built to exploit 'a vulnerability in human psychology' with a dopamine-and-validation loop. As of an August 2026 update, a court let 3,000-plus youth addiction suits against Meta, Google, TikTok, and Snap proceed, with a first trial set for August 18 and a New Mexico order for Meta to pay an extra $567M.

Why it matters

The engine keeps one thing deliberately open: the products are clearly designed to grab you, but whether the mental harm is an intended goal or just an unplanned side effect is left unsettled, and it names no single culprit.

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #141] The variable-reward attention-capture engine. Persuasive-tech design — Tristan Harris / Center for Humane Technology (2019 Senate testimony: the ad model links profit to attention-capture, a 'race to the bottom of the brain stem,' 'voodoo doll simulations' of users) + Sean Parker (Axios 2017: Facebook built to exploit 'a vulnerability in human psychology' via a social-validation/dopamine loop; 'God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains') — deploys variable-reward schedules, autoplay, and infinite scroll to induce NORMATIVE DISSOCIATION (diminished self-awareness, distorted time, reduced volition, memory disruption): the 'zombified' / mindless state. APEX (held): the design is deliberately engineered to ENGAGE, but the cognitive HARM is an emergent market externality — NOT a documented design-to-degrade. Feeds maxwells_demon_sorting_state (the degraded substrate). Name no holder. [Live pass Aug 11 2026] The 9th Circuit (Aug 10) let 3,000+ youth social-media-addiction suits against Meta/Google/TikTok/Snap proceed — Section 230 held a defense, not immunity from suit; first trial Aug 18; a New Mexico court ordered Meta to pay an added $567M (~Aug 6).
