What they do
Predicting traits from genes works okay across a whole population, but collapses — by roughly half — when you compare siblings, which is exactly what embryo selection does. Realistic IQ gain is about 2.5 points, not the 6 that's marketed, and the 'best' embryo is the tallest kid only about a quarter of the time.
How it works
Population scores absorb family wealth, upbringing and mating patterns; strip those out and little predictive signal is left.
Why it matters
The companies sell the claim; the peer-reviewed math takes most of it back. Doctors' own society says it's not ready for clinical use.

Polygenic scores are built from population-wide comparisons; once you test them WITHIN a family (sibling vs sibling — the situation embryo selection actually faces), the predictive signal collapses. Reviews put the reduction on the order of 50% after controlling for sibling effects[1]. Karavani et al. (Cell 2019) estimate only ~2.5 IQ points of realistic gain (not the ~6 marketed) and found the top-scoring embryo was actually the tallest child in only ~25% of cases[2]. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine concluded in 2025 that polygenic embryo screening 'is a nascent and unproven technology that should not be used clinically at this time'[3].
