TurkStream Pipeline

artifactNations & Geopolitics
Since early 2025, one pipeline is the last remaining route for Russian gas into Europe — and it runs through Turkey.
Who they are

TurkStream, a two-line natural-gas pipeline running across the Black Sea from Russia.

What they do

After other routes closed, it became the sole remaining pipeline carrying Russian gas to Europe, delivering 31.5 billion cubic meters a year.

How it works

When Ukraine's gas-transit deal expired in January 2025, TurkStream was left as the only route: one line feeds Turkey, the second delivers to Europe via Bulgaria, which puts Turkey in the middle as a key energy gatekeeper but also ties it to Moscow, still Turkey's largest gas supplier.

Why it matters

It hands Turkey real power over Europe's remaining Russian gas while deepening its dependence on Russia. That two-way grip makes the pipeline a strategic pressure point.

The engine's record — word for word
Two offshore lines across Black Sea, 31.5 bcm/year total. Post-Jan 2025 (Ukraine transit expired), became sole remaining pipeline route for Russian gas to Europe. One line feeds Turkey, second delivers to Europe via Bulgaria. Elevates Turkey to central energy arbiter but creates structural dependency on Moscow. Russia remains Turkey largest gas supplier.
