SynHG — The Synthetic Human Genome Project (2025– )

programBiotech & Transhumanism
A £10 million project, launched in 2025, whose goal is to write a human chromosome from scratch.
Who they are

Wellcome-funded, five years, led from Oxford with four British universities — and, notably, an ethics programme funded alongside the science rather than after it.

What they do

Not editing existing DNA. Writing the sequence itself, from nothing, at chromosome scale, within five to ten years.

How it works

It sits at the end of a long thread this site already tracks: making a being outside the womb, then making one without egg or sperm, then growing bodies and minds in dishes — and now writing the instructions themselves.

Why it matters

With one uncomfortable detail: the rule requiring companies to screen who's ordering synthesized DNA was cancelled in mid-2025 — the same season this launched. A chromosome is still not a genome, and a genome is still not a creature. But the specification is now something people write.

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #183] The genome-writing arm of the engineered-beings toolkit, and the only item on it with no prior home in canon. WHAT IT IS: Wellcome-funded, £10M over five years, announced June 2025, led by Jason Chin (Ellison Institute/Oxford) with Cambridge, Kent, Manchester and Imperial — target is a COMPLETE SYNTHETIC HUMAN CHROMOSOME within 5-10 years. It carries an embedded ethics programme ('Care-full Synthesis,' Joy Zhang, Kent), which is itself the tell: the funder built the boundary-debate INTO the build (see scholastic_art_vs_nature_debate). WHERE IT SITS: the deep-time thread runs make-a-being-outside-the-womb (liber_vaccae_record) → generation without gametes (cloning_substrate_post_dolly_arc, ivg_gametogenesis) → design-and-grow bodies without editing (levin_michael) → grow the mind outside the body (organoid_intelligence) → and now WRITE THE SPECIFICATION ITSELF. Precedent floor: JCVI-syn3.0's 473-gene minimal cell (Science 2016) and syn3A division restoration (Cell 2021); frontier: a synthetic cell integrating DNA self-replication with lipid biosynthesis (Nat. Commun. 2026). LIMITS, STATED: a chromosome is not a genome and a genome is not an organism; no synthetic cell yet self-replicates completely; nothing here has been booted into a body. GOVERNANCE NOTE: the US screening requirement for synthesised nucleic-acid orders was countermanded by EO 14292 in mid-2025 — the choke point every writing project passes through loosened in the same season this project launched (see nucleic_acid_compiler). Held as capability and programme record; no intent claimed.
