Spruce Pine High-Purity-Quartz Floor

node
Nearly all the ultra-pure quartz needed to make advanced computer chips comes from one small town, and a hurricane briefly shut it down.
Who they are

The Spruce Pine high-purity-quartz supply floor (Report #154), a companion to the engine's Africa mineral-supply node.

What they do

A single geographic chokepoint that the entire advanced-chip supply chain physically depends on.

How it works

The ultra-pure quartz used to make the crucibles that grow silicon crystals and the parts for advanced chip packaging comes overwhelmingly from Spruce Pine, North Carolina, a dependence exposed when Hurricane Helene shut the mines in September 2024; if chipmaking relies on advanced packaging it relies on this quartz, just as it relies on African copper and cobalt for electricity.

Why it matters

It reveals that the whole high-tech compute economy rests on a single physical location, a hidden vulnerability the engine holds open without naming anyone in control.

The engine's record — word for word
[Report #154] The high-purity-quartz supply-floor — sibling to africa_mineral_floor. Ultra-high-purity quartz for the crucibles used to grow monocrystalline silicon + fabricate the interposers for HBM and advanced packaging (CoWoS) is overwhelmingly sourced from a SINGLE geography: Spruce Pine, North Carolina (Sept 2024 Hurricane Helene shut the mines, exposing the chokepoint). If the interconnect relies on advanced packaging it relies on quartz; if on electricity it relies on copper/cobalt (africa_mineral_floor). A single-geography physical floor beneath the whole compute substrate (interconnect_binding_constraint / tsmc_chokepoint). Held; name no holder.
