What they do
It is a demonstrated way to send a satellite to space directly from a hidden underwater submarine.
How it works
On 7 July 1998 the submarine K-407 Novomoskovsk, submerged in the Barents Sea, launched Germany's small Tubsat satellites, the first satellite ever put into orbit from a submarine, using missiles built from SLBMs.
Why it matters
It proves a mobile, hard-to-track way to reach orbit without fixed launch sites; the engine treats it strictly as a documented capability that can carry civilian payloads on military hardware, not as proof of any unified secret program.
