Under Göring's Four Year Plan, 82 crew sailed from Hamburg on the ship Schwabenland to reduce Germany's reliance on imported fats by setting up a whaling base; Captain Ritscher's flying boats dropped swastika markers across 350,000 square km. Norway found out only by accident, when the wife of a deputy leader mentioned it in a phone call to a Norwegian geologist, and Norway rushed its own claim five days before the Germans arrived.
Why it matters
The engine explicitly rules out the 'coordinated cabal' reading; the stronger explanations are ordinary resource-protection and reactive scrambling, and it became the foundation stone of Norway's later Antarctic ownership claims.
