Pink Tide (Jiang False Dialectic)

conceptNations & Geopolitics
Latin America keeps swinging between left and right governments - but the minerals flow out either way.
Who they are

The 'Pink Tide,' the back-and-forth between leftist and right-wing governments across Latin America.

What they do

The engine frames it as a false choice where the political rhetoric swings but the extraction never stops.

How it works

The region cycled from a first leftist wave (Chavez, Lula, Morales, 1998-2015) to a right-wing reversal (Bolsonaro, Macri, 2015-2020) to a second leftist wave and a libertarian backlash (Milei, 2023). Yet Brazil's soy to China, Chile's copper and lithium exports, and Colombia's coca all continued unchanged regardless of who was in power.

Why it matters

The engine's point is that the left-right drama is largely theater - the resource extraction continues no matter which side wins.

The engine's record — word for word
Left-right oscillation in Latin America: First Pink Tide (Chavez, Lula, Morales, Kirchner, 1998-2015), Right-Wing Reversal (Bolsonaro, Macri, Pinera, 2015-2020), Second Pink Tide (Lula return, Boric, Petro, 2020+), Libertarian Backlash (Milei 2023). Jiang test: extraction continues regardless. Brazil soy to China identical under Lula and Bolsonaro. Chile copper/lithium exports unchanged under Pinera and Boric. Colombia coca expanded under both Duque and Petro. The rhetoric changes. The minerals flow out. [Live pass Jul 27 2026] New US tariffs hit Mexico (USMCA-compliant exports stay 0% per Sheinbaum) and Brazil (12.5% forced-labor + 25% Sec-301; Brazil answered with a ~$3.7B relief package + WTO challenge); Brazil recalled its ambassador to Argentina over Milei; Flavio Bolsonaro launched a presidential bid endorsed by Netanyahu and Milei.
