What they do
The engine treats it as technology letting the body's peripheral nervous system be continuously watched and even controlled.
How it works
These tiny batteryless sensors (0.8mm x 3mm x 1mm) are placed inside nerve or muscle tissue and are powered and read using ultrasound bouncing off them — no batteries, no wires (published in Neuron, August 2016, by UC Berkeley). A later advance, EGNITE graphene electrodes (Nature Nanotechnology 2024), added two-way high-resolution neural recording.
Why it matters
It means the nerves running through your body could be monitored and modulated around the clock, a building block for deep human-machine integration.
