Operation Mockingbird / Mighty Wurlitzer
mechanismIntelligence & Surveillance · Media & Managed Opposition · Darknet & Cyber
The CIA once had hundreds of American journalists on assignment — and today that media control is openly built into the corporate structure.
Who they are
Operation Mockingbird, a CIA program begun under Frank Wisner in 1948 to shape the news through cooperative journalists.
What they do
The engine treats it as a documented CIA-media relationship that never really ended but was privatized.
How it works
A 1977 Rolling Stone expose by Carl Bernstein reported 400-plus American journalists did CIA work over 25 years, with top outlets like the New York Times, CBS and Time involved; the Church Committee confirmed the CIA-media nexus but the engine says it covered up the full extent. After Church, the structure was privatized — direct CIA payroll gave way to corporate consolidation and NGO front groups. (The engine also separates this from 'Project Mockingbird,' a distinct 1963 wiretap of two journalists.)
Why it matters
The engine's point is that the machine no longer needs to operate in secret — media influence is now baked openly into who owns the outlets, 'proudly listed in the broadcast credits.'
The engine's record — word for word
CIA program initiated under Frank Wisner (OPC, 1948). NSC 4-A authorized psychological operations. Bernstein 1977 Rolling Stone expose: 400+ American journalists carried out CIA assignments over 25 years. Apex institutions: NYT (Arthur Hays Sulzberger, Cy Sulzberger signed secrecy agreement), CBS (William Paley), Time Inc (Henry Luce). Joseph Alsop, Stewart Alsop as witting assets. Church Committee (1975-76): 126 meetings, 800 witnesses, 110,000 documents. Confirmed CIA-media nexus but Committee covered up full extent. Post-Church: architecture privatized — direct CIA payroll replaced by corporate consolidation and NGO cutouts. The Wurlitzer no longer operates in secret; it is proudly listed in broadcast credits. [Report #113 — Acceptance Machine] Demand-side conditioning role: a vector of the acceptance_machine (see node). [Report #122] Distinct from the media program: 'Project Mockingbird' was a discrete 1963 wiretap operation (12 Mar-15 Jun 1963) on journalists Paul Scott and Robert Allen, authorized by DCI John McCone and run by the Office of Security (documented in the CIA 'Family Jewels'). No shared operational cadre with MKULTRA is established in the primary record.
