The LaVey Biography Is Contested At Source

artifactOccult & Esoteric
A lot of what he said about himself doesn't check out.
Who they are

The split between his authorised biography and a 1991 magazine investigation[1].

What they do

It matters because some of his legend is the only source for itself.

How it works

Reportedly checked and unsupported: an affair with Marilyn Monroe at a theatre whose manager said she never worked there; a job with the Clyde Beatty Circus, whose archive had no record; work as a police photographer, which the police had no record of. His estranged daughter backed the investigation after his death. The Jayne Mansfield romance is disputed as a publicity arrangement[1].

Why it matters

Not a verdict on the man. A note that a class of claim starts and ends with him, so anything resting on it carries that. The engine's structural material about him is unaffected.

The engine's record — word for word
Recorded so that any engine claim resting on LaVey's self-presentation carries its dispute with it. The historiography splits between the authorised account by Blanche Barton, his final partner and Church High Priestess, and Lawrence Wright's 1991 Rolling Stone investigation[1]. Claims Wright is reported to have checked and found unsupported: an affair with Marilyn Monroe at the Mayan Theater in 1948 (the venue's manager Paul Valentine stated it was not a burlesque house then and that Monroe was never employed there); employment with the Clyde Beatty Circus (the Circus World Museum, holding the 1947 Beatty records, had none); and work as a San Francisco Police Department forensic photographer (SFPD had no record). LaVey's estranged daughter Zeena Schreck published a fact sheet after his death endorsing Wright's findings, per the same source. The Jayne Mansfield relationship is disputed by her representatives and later biographers as a mutual publicity arrangement, per the same source. NOT A VERDICT ON THE MAN: this node records that a specific class of biographical claim originates with the subject and was checked against institutional record-holders. Canon's existing LaVey material is structural (the Aquino schism, the 1969 Baphomet adaptation) and is untouched by this.
