Capt. John D. LaMothe (DIA Medical Intelligence)
playerOccult & Esoteric
The earliest named American at the end of the psychic-warfare paper trail.
Who they are
Captain, later Major, John D. LaMothe of US Army Medical Intelligence. The 1972 report states it plainly: 'The author of this study is Captain John D. LaMothe, Medical Intelligence.'
What they do
He wrote the Defense Intelligence Agency's July 1972 study of behaviour manipulation and was co-credited on its September 1975 companion on Soviet and Czechoslovakian parapsychology.
How it works
His 1972 report organises the whole subject by route into a person — drugs, light, sound, deprivation, electromagnetic effect, media — and opens with Britain's handling of internees in Northern Ireland as its demonstration case.
Why it matters
Follow the 1980 psychological-warfare papers backwards and he is standing at the end of the chain. Both his reports are the footing of the December 1980 Military Review article, and that article is the one 'From PSYOP to MindWar' was written to answer.
The engine's record — word for word
Capt. (later Maj.) John D. LaMothe, US Army Medical Intelligence — author of DIA ST-CS-01-169-72, 'Controlled Offensive Behavior — USSR' (July 1972; dia_controlled_offensive_behavior_1972), stated in the document: 'The author of this study is Captain John D. LaMothe, Medical Intelligence.' Co-credited with Louis F. Maire III on DST-1810S-387-75, September 1975 (dia_soviet_czech_parapsychology_1975).
Engine read: the earliest named US official at the end of the 1980 psychic-warfare chain. Both his reports are the footing of alexander_new_mental_battlefield_1980, which is the article mindwar was written to answer. The Northern Ireland material that opens his 1972 study (northern_ireland_1971_detainee_regime) is the point where the file stops being about the USSR.
