Heinz Felfe — KGB Penetration of the Gehlen/BND Continuity
nodeIntelligence & Surveillance
The famous story that ex-Nazi spies were quietly handed to the CIA and West Germany hides an embarrassing catch: the enemy was riding along inside them.
Who they are
Heinz Felfe, a senior West German intelligence officer who rose to deputy chief of counter-espionage while secretly working for the Soviet KGB.
What they do
He is the engine's proof that keeping the same spy network running after WWII did not mean keeping the upper hand — the network was compromised from the top.
How it works
Felfe climbed to a top counter-spy job in West Germany's BND while being a dedicated Soviet agent (alongside officer Ludwig Albert, per a CIA FOIA file), and he steered German intelligence to help Soviet deception schemes like the LENA operation — turning the celebrated Nazi-to-CIA-to-BND staff pipeline into a two-way channel for years.
Why it matters
It shows that the same personnel surviving from one regime to the next can carry the enemy's mole inside them, so surviving structure does not automatically mean surviving advantage — the engine now flags this caution wherever it cites that pipeline's effectiveness.
The engine's record — word for word
[Report #168] The continuity lane carried its compromise with it. The KGB penetrated the Gehlen Organization at its highest levels: Heinz Felfe rose to deputy chief of the BND's counterespionage section while working as a dedicated Soviet agent, alongside senior officer Ludwig Albert (CIA FOIA: 'KGB Exploitation of Heinz Felfe'). Felfe manipulated West German intelligence to serve Soviet deception operations — notably the LENA deception — meaning the celebrated FHO→CIA→BND personnel carry-forward (gehlen_organization) was, for years, a two-way channel. Record read per finding #168.001: the H-CONTINUITY carry-forward is documented AND its product was systemically degraded by the adversary — continuity of structure is not continuity of advantage. Wired as a qualifier on every surface that cites Gehlen-continuity efficacy (post_1945_continuity_verdict).
