Hashemite->Saudi Custodianship of the Two Holy Mosques (1924-25)
event
The family that guarded Islam's holiest cities for 700 years was conquered and replaced by the House of Saud in the 1920s.
Who they are
The 1924-25 transfer of control over Mecca and Medina from the Hashemites to Abdulaziz Ibn Saud.
What they do
The engine logs it as a documented conquest that became a pillar of Saudi legitimacy.
How it works
The Hashemite Sharifate of Mecca ran the Hejaz for about 700 years; after Sharif Hussein bin Ali proclaimed himself Caliph in March 1924, Ibn Saud's Wahhabi Ikhwan forces captured Mecca in December 1924 and then Medina and Jeddah in 1925, folding the Hejaz into what became Saudi Arabia in 1932; King Fahd formally took the title 'Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' in 1986.
Why it matters
It matters because control of Islam's holiest sites became central to Saudi legitimacy, while the Hashemites today retain custodianship only of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites.
The engine's record — word for word
[Report #119] The Hashemite Sharifate of Mecca administered the Hejaz (Mecca/Medina) for ~700 years. Sharif Hussein bin Ali led the 1916 Arab Revolt (British-backed) and proclaimed himself Caliph in Mar 1924 — alienating rivals. Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, with Wahhabi Ikhwan forces, captured Mecca (5 Dec 1924) and then Medina/Jeddah (1925), deposing the Hashemites; the Hejaz was unified into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (1932). King Fahd formally adopted the title 'Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' (Khadim al-Haramayn) on 27 Oct 1986, institutionalizing custody as a pillar of Saudi legitimacy. Documented conquest + state-building. The Hashemite line today holds custodianship of JERUSALEM's Islamic/Christian holy sites only (1994 Wadi Araba; 2013 Jordan-Palestine accord).
