Greek Polis Exemption Structure — Asylia, Mysteries, Periclean Citizenship
doctrine
Ancient Athens ran on a double standard: sacred spaces got total immunity while outsiders got shut out entirely.
Who they are
The exemption system of the Greek city-state — its sacred asylum, secret mysteries, and citizenship laws.
What they do
The engine treats it as a two-way example of the same 'who gets exempted' pattern operating inside one civilization.
How it works
On the protective side, Greek sanctuaries had inviolability (asylia), Delphi was recognized as autonomous, and revealing the Eleusinian Mysteries was punishable by death (Alcibiades was condemned in 415 BCE); on the exclusion side, Pericles' 451/0 BCE citizenship law limited citizenship to those with two Athenian parents (one audit expelled about 5,000 people), and resident foreigners were barred from politics and from owning land; the wealthiest were also legally compelled to fund public works (funding a warship or a festival chorus).
Why it matters
It documents, with named beneficiaries and excluded groups, how a society grants special immunity to some and denies it to others — and the engine holds the competing interpretations open rather than declaring one true.
The engine's record — word for word
[deep root - antiquity context] A bidirectional instance of the exemption fork (#100) within one civic order. PROTECTED-EXCEPTION side: Greek sanctuaries held asylia (inviolability); the Amphictyonic League recognized Delphi as autonomous — sacred precinct beyond any single polis's jurisdiction, the League empowered to declare expulsion/sacred war; the Eleusinian Mysteries were placed beyond civic scrutiny by law — profanation was capital (Alcibiades, 415 BCE, condemned to death in absentia, property confiscated). EXEMPTION-AGAINST side: Pericles' Citizenship Law (451/0 BCE) restricted citizenship to those with two Athenian parents — an audit found 14,040 citizens and expelled ~5,000; metics were excluded from Assembly/jury/office and barred from owning immovable property (enktesis). DOCUMENTED FACT: author-of-record = the Athenian demos/polis + the Amphictyonic League; beneficiaries = citizen-initiates and sacred precincts; excluded = metics, barbaroi, slaves. Readings HELD, not asserted. Sibling: roman_princeps_legibus_solutus, eleusinian_mysteries. Tier-1/2 (Perseus/Thomas R. Martin; Amphictyonic League scholarship; Profanation of the Mysteries sources). [Report #174] Extended: +the fiscal LITURGY system (trierarchy = fund/command a trireme; choregia = fund a festival chorus) legally compelling the wealthiest citizens to fund public works. CORRECTION to the source-report: the evasion mechanism it called 'skepsis' conflates two procedures - skepsis = claim a statutory exemption; ANTIDOSIS = the exchange-challenge that offloads the burden onto a richer citizen. NOTE (complicates the L1 story, flagged not smoothed): in the liturgy the elite are the TARGETS of extraction (the demos taxing the rich), not its secret authors - the weakest fit for an 'authored extraction machine' reading, so the lens is held emergent/target-side here, not L1. Apex held.
