Endogenous DMT / Cardiac Arrest Spike

concept
The brain makes its own version of a powerful psychedelic — and it seems to surge at the moment of death.
Who they are

Endogenous DMT — the psychedelic compound produced naturally inside the brain.

What they do

Research shows the brain makes DMT on its own, and levels spike at the point of cardiac arrest.

How it works

A 2019 University of Michigan study (Dean et al.) confirmed DMT in rat brain tissue at levels comparable to serotonin and dopamine, made by neurons (not just the pineal gland), and found a massive DMT surge in the visual cortex during cardiac arrest; separately, DMT experiences scored higher than placebo on 15 of 16 near-death-experience scale items, suggesting DMT mimics near-death experiences.

Why it matters

It hints that DMT could be a natural end-of-life brain event tied to near-death experiences — but the engine is careful: the detection and the death-surge are established, while the idea that it's a purpose-built 'higher-plane survival mechanism' is contested (a 2023 study questioned it), so that meaning is deliberately held open.

The engine's record — word for word
Dean et al. (2019, Univ Michigan): DMT confirmed in rat brain tissue at basal concentrations (mean 1.02 nM) comparable to serotonin and dopamine — produced by neurons not just pineal gland. INMT knockout rats still produce DMT via alternative biosynthetic pathways = robust biological redundancy. Critical finding: upon cardiac arrest induction, massive surge of DMT in visual cortex independent of intact pineal gland. Peri-mortem spike structurally correlates with Near-Death Experiences. DMT-NDE comparison: 15 of 16 Greyson NDE scale items scored higher under DMT than placebo, 10 reaching statistical significance. DMT is confirmed NDE-mimetic. Suggests DMT = terminal neuroprotectant AND ontological catalyst shifting consciousness from failing biological substrate. [Report #135] Endogenous leg of the higher-D-observer / DMT analysis: ESTABLISHED = INMT presence + DMT detection in rodent brain + a measured DMT rise in rat cortex after cardiac arrest (Dean 2019), independent of the pineal. CONTESTED/speculative = the neuroprotectant / birth / near-death FUNCTIONAL role (a 2023 study found INMT not essential; brain concentrations questioned). Soften any 'pre-programmed higher-plane survival mechanism' claim accordingly. Held; name no holder.
