CBDC Programmable Money

mechanismMoney & Finance · Nations & Geopolitics · Crypto & Digital ID
A digital dollar could be programmed to expire, be taxed the instant you spend it, or be frozen by remote command.
Who they are

Central bank digital currency (CBDC) — government-issued digital money being rolled out worldwide and coordinated through the Bank for International Settlements.

What they do

The engine treats it as a control system: because the money is programmable, the behavior of the people using it becomes programmable too.

How it works

BIS chief Agustin Carstens said the central bank would have 'absolute control' over the rules of the currency and the technology to enforce them. Cross-border pilot projects include mBridge (China, UAE, Thailand, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia), Icebreaker, Dunbar, and Mariana. Built-in features can include expiration dates, geographic limits, spending-category limits, negative interest, instant taxation, and remote freeze or delete. China's e-CNY already pays interest, turning digital cash into digital deposits, and in its final 'Going Direct' form the central bank can drop money straight into your wallet, skipping regular banks. Every transaction becomes a line in one central database.

Why it matters

It matters because whoever controls the rules controls what you can buy, where, when, and whether your money keeps working at all.

The engine's record — word for word
BIS-coordinated global deployment. Carstens (BIS GM): "the central bank will have absolute control on the rules and regulations that will determine the use of the currency, and the technology to enforce that." mBridge MVP (China/UAE/Thailand/HK/Saudi). Icebreaker (retail CBDC cross-border). Dunbar (multi-CBDC settlement). Mariana (wholesale AMM exchange). Programmable features: expiration dates, geographic restrictions, category restrictions, negative interest rates, real-time taxation, remote freeze/delete. China e-CNY paying interest on wallets — shifting from "digital cash" to "digital deposit money." Going Direct terminal form: central bank injects liquidity directly into wallets, bypassing commercial banking. Every transaction = line of data in centralized database.
