Brotherhood-Western intelligence convergence (Cold War)
mechanismIntelligence & Surveillance
Britain did quietly work with Islamist groups during the Cold War — but the sweeping 'the West created the Muslim Brotherhood' claim doesn't hold.
Who they are
The Cold War overlap between the Muslim Brotherhood and Western (mainly British) intelligence.
What they do
The carefully limited, defensible version of the claim that Western spies backed the Brotherhood.
How it works
Britain gave some covert support to Islamist forces as a counterweight to secular Arab nationalism and communism, with historian Mark Curtis dating first Egyptian-Brotherhood covert funding to 1942, and a 1957 British ambassador's dispatch noting the Brotherhood was useful to King Jordan's King Hussein against left-wing agitators — approval of tolerating it, not a British operation running it. Historian Martyn Frampton explicitly debunks the idea that Western intelligence created or ran the Brotherhood.
Why it matters
The engine keeps only the narrow, sourced truth — tactical, limited cooperation — and rejects the bigger claim of a coordinated MI6-plus-CIA program owning the group. It's convergence, not permanent ownership.
The engine's record — word for word
The DEFENSIBLE 20th-century residue of the book's link [8], held with strict scope. Britain extended some covert support to Islamist forces (incl. the Brotherhood) as a counterweight to secular Arab nationalism / communism (Mark Curtis, Secret Affairs, dating first Egyptian-Brotherhood covert funding to 1942). Charles Johnston's May 1957 dispatch (British ambassador, Amman, to Selwyn Lloyd) records the Brotherhood as a 'strong arm' organisation useful TO KING HUSSEIN against left-wing extremists in the streets -- i.e. British approval of Hussein's tolerance of it, NOT a British operational deployment. REFRAMED: tactical engagement + limited British covert support survives the null; a coordinated MI6+CIA funding PROGRAM does NOT -- Martyn Frampton (The Muslim Brotherhood and the West, 2018) explicitly debunks the 'Western intelligence created/ran the Brotherhood' thesis, so he is NOT co-support for it. Tactical convergence, not permanent unified ownership. [Report #173]
